Parents & Childhood


  • Harbhajan Singh was born into a Sikh family in Jalandhar, Punjab. Father Sardar Sardev Singh Plaha was a businessman who ran two companies.
  • Maa Avatar Kaur is a housewife. The family has four sisters apart from Harbhajan, three elder sisters, and one younger sister.
  • Harbhajan Singh's childhood name was Sonu.

His mother remembers his childhood, saying

Sonu was fond of sports since childhood. He used to play passionately, junk, karate, cricket, and bhangra, etc. with great fervor.

Cricket Training

He was the coach Charanjit Singh Buller, who thought he wanted to learn to bat, so he started teaching him batting. But after a few years, Buller died.

He obeyed his father and came with his cousin to the new coach, Davinder Arora, to learn cricket.
From the very first day, Sonu started impressing the coach with his bowling.

His new coach Arora says,

From the very first day, Bhajji gave a good performance in bowling. In the training session, he was scheduled to bowl for three hours in a straight and one hour on a single wicket.

Coach Arora goes on to talk about his tough routine,

He used to come to the playground at around 11 am every day. Later fellow children also used to come. Then he used to return to lunch after practice. After lunch, he returned to the ground at 3 o'clock and continued his practice. This practice session ran until late evening.


 
Harbhajan Singh, who lived with the dreams of his father, was determined from his childhood.

Due to which he did not leave the practice session even for a single day even when he was ill, while he had to go to the practice ground in Daulatpur three times a day by bicycle from his home.

Although he used to win the day's war, in the dark, he had the power to win the war.

Whenever the light went in the evening, he used to do his bowling practice by lighting the headlight of the scooter standing in the park.

Punjab Under-16 Debut

At the age of 15, he got a chance to make his debut for Punjab Under-16s against Haryana, where he bowled amazing bowling with 7 wickets for 46 runs and 5 wickets for 138 runs.

The impressive debut was also sustained in the second match, where he scored 56 runs while playing against Delhi and also committed fatal bowling.

Similarly, in the third match, he took 11 wickets against Himachal Pradesh to give Punjab a convincing innings victory.

Due to this award-winning performance, he was soon selected for the North John Under-16. Where he took two wickets and scored 18 runs while performing average in that one-day match series.

India Under-19 Debut

He then got a chance to play an ODI match against South Africa for India Under-19s after a few months. In this match, he managed to take one wicket for 19 runs in seven overs. India also succeeded in winning.

Harbhajan Singh's consistent bowling performance was also influenced by the fact that he played for several teams shortly after his debut.


 
In the same sequence, he got a chance to play against Punjab-19 against Jammu and Kashmir in 1997-96. In one inning of this match, he scored 54 runs and took 8 wickets, once and gave Punjab a bang.

First Class Match & International Test Debut

He soon got his big prize when he got a chance to debut in first-class matches against Services. In that match, he bowled well with a bowling figure of 3/35.

But he was recalled to the Punjab Under-19 team the following week.

Playing two matches in this category, he made his place in the senior team again by bowling with excellent bowling figures like 5/75 and 7/44 and performed excellently throughout the year, due to which he came on the Indian Tour on 25 March 1998 against Australia Succeeded in making a debut

But he was able to give his average performance in this match by taking two wickets.
  • ODI Debut

But he got a chance to make ODI matches against New Zealand only a month later.

But he could take only one wicket in this match, but was able to impress everyone with a cheap run rate of 3.20.

  • There was a time in Harbhajan Singh's life when his bowling performance was completely lost.
  • The year was 1999-2000. When he faced a severe drought of wickets in many series.
  • In the same year, he played for the Board President 11 with a good bowling figure of 2/88 and 2/59 respectively, and also scored 38 and 39 against South Africa.
  • Due to which his team managed to lose to South Africa.
  • But he could not find a place in the national team. He was replaced by Murali Karthik.
  • He then returned to India and started playing for the home team.
  • After some time, he found his old rhythm, playing for Punjab and took 24 wickets in four first-class matches.
  • Meanwhile, he got an opportunity to learn bowling tricks from off-spinner Srinivas Venkataraghavan and Erapali Prasanna, who was part of the Indian team at the National Cricket Academy in 1970.
  • But he was expelled from the Academy due to indiscipline.
  • Due to this, whatever remaining possibility of Harbhajan Singh being selected in Team India was over.
  • In the same year, he suffered a big problem when his father died and the economy of his family of 4 virgin sisters deteriorated.
  • The only son in the family, Harbhajan Singh started thinking of driving a truck in America to earn money.
  • In this situation, the current captain Bengal tiger Sourav Ganguly appeared. He continued to fight for selection in his team.
  • But even in this difficult situation, Harbhajan did not lose focus on his bowling and was able to get his old rhythm fully in domestic cricket.
  • His next four first match bowling figures were like this, 3/29 and 3/39 against Himachal Pradesh, 2/53, and 5/88 against Jammu and Kashmir, 4/77 and 2/23 against Haryana and Services. 5/40 against.
  • In all these matches, Punjab won by an innings due to Harbhajan Singh's best bowling performance.
  • Despite such a great bowling performance, his team remained skeptical about the selection in India, and Ganguly was also keen on his selection.

  • Re-entry and Hat-trick in Team India

  • Eventually, time accepted the hard work of both.
  • At the same time, Jumbo received Anil Kumble before the 2001 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Which benefited Harbhajan Singh. He was selected in the team.
  • He showed his aggressive intent by bowling with the best bowling figure of 3/8 and 4/141 against Australia in the first Test match but India lost this match.
  • Meanwhile, India's leading fast bowler Javagal Srinath had to withdraw from the series due to finger injury.
  • Now, Harbhajan Singh has a big responsibility to handle Indian bowling.
  • He understood this responsibility well and gave the career-best performance in the second Test match, taking seven wickets in the first innings against Australia and being the first Indian to take a hat-trick by completing the first hat-trick wicket in this match.
  • In the second innings also he continued his magic with 6 wickets.
  • Similarly, in the third match, he broke the back of Australia by taking 7 wickets for 133 runs in the first innings and 8 wickets for 84 runs in the second innings and was successful in giving India the inning win and series win.
  • In this series, Harbhajan Singh was declared the man of the match and the man of the series.
  • This series changed his life.
  • There was a spate of rewards for him by the Government of India and the State Government. The family of his family was also happy again.
  • He got the responsibility of both father and brother by getting his elder sisters married.

Along with this, he made his IPL debut in 2008 by Mumbai Indians. Where he made a lot of headlines with his best performance due to the Sreesanth-Thapadd scandal.

He has so far scored 119 wickets and 783 runs in his IPL career. Along with this, he has also captained the Mumbai Indians and has made a significant contribution to his team in winning the IPL title twice.
